Waterways health: from the headwaters to the sea

IQ Lecture presented by Kathryn Pugh, Ecologist
Kathryn has been an aquatic ecologist for more than 15 years, initially in the marine and estuarine systems and more recently focussing on freshwater systems.
Kathryn has worked in, on and under Tasmanian waters statewide, from the crystal-clear headwaters of mountain streams, to the tannin-stained waters of Bathurst and Macquarie harbours, to the sponge gardens of Bass Strait and the murky depths of our industrial ports.
The use of rapid assessment tools as an indicator of ecosystem health is widely accepted, with AusRivAS and community Waterwatch programs long established across the country. Many catchments and estuaries now have extensive, long-term data sets that can tell us a great deal about the state of our waterways. The seminar will discuss the opportunities and challenges these large datasets present, and some of the trends emerging from these valuable programs.
