Understanding Diseases of the Ageing Brain

This public talk will be relevant to anyone interested in the neurodegenerative diseases that, tragically, are common in Tasmania’s ageing population –Alzheimer’s disease, fronto-temporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease.
This public talk will be delivered by three Menzies researchers:

  • Associate Professor Tracey Dickson is a Deputy Director at Menzies and leads the Institute’s Neurodegenerative Diseases and Brain Injury research theme. She collaborates internationally on Parkinson’s disease, dementia and motor neuron disease research and is contributing to the latest developments in our understanding of these very common and debilitating illnesses. You can read more about Associate Professor Dickson’s work here: http://www.utas.edu.au/profiles/staff/menzies/tracey-dickson
  • Dr Catherine Blizzard is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Menzies. She works on defining the causes and developing potential treatments for brain diseases, particularly motor neuron disease. In 2015 Dr Blizzard published research that that identified for the first time the primary site in the nervous system for the development of motor neuron disease.
  • Emily Handley is a PhD student who has come to Menzies after growing up on the North West Coast of Tasmania. Under the supervision of Dr Blizzard and A/Prof Dickson she is looking into the changes between brain connections that take place in the early stages of fronto-temporal dementia and motor neuron disease.
