THE NATURALISTS FOOTSTEPS

The naturalist, Jacques Julien Houtou Labillardière, was a member of the D’Entrecasteaux expedition which spent seven weeks exploring and mapping the area surrounding Recherche Bay in 1792 and 1793.
Labillardière collected thousands of plant specimens and published a remarkable account of his observations and interactions with the local area and its people.
Nicola Dickson visited south eastern Tasmania in 2016 to re-trace the steps of the naturalist. The works in this exhibition try to capture this experience, informed by imagining past events and by a sense of place.
