The Discovery and Destiny of the Southern Cross

A FREE public lecture by Prof David Malin.
The stars of the Southern Cross have been known to the indigenous peoples of the Southern Hemisphere since it was first inhabited tens of thousands of years ago. Today it appears on the flags of many nations including Australia. In this profusely illustrated talk I will trace these lines of discovery and describe how the Cross can be used as clock, calendar and compass. I will also discuss the nature and evolution of the stars themselves, as well as their slowly changing locations on the sky.
