Crafting Instruments for a Sea of Noise – Art/Science Collaboration in Antarctica and the Mediterranean

Join this public talk with Donald Fortescue, an artist who creates sculptural ‘instruments’, installations, video, sound works and images which reframe our view of the world. He employs a wide-range of contemporary digital technologies used in tandem with craft-based techniques from contemporary studio craft, sculpture, seafaring, musical instrument making, and the histories of scientific discovery. Donald Fortescue completed his Ph.D. at the Australian National University where his research focused on the congruencies between the methodologies, aspirations and limits of science and art and involved field work in the Arctic (the Svalbard Archipelago) and the Antarctic. Donald will share his recent research and creative process in his talk.
