Light, Body Clocks and Sleep: Science to health

Professor Russell Foster, CBE, FRSB, FMedSci, FRS, Director, Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, Head Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, University of Oxford will be giving a public lecture at MSP on Wednesday 29 May 2019.

About the Speaker

Professor Foster is a sleep researcher and Head of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Institute and is a Fellow of Brasenose College Oxford. His research addresses how circadian rhythms and sleep are generated and regulated and what happens when these systems fail as a result of societal pressures or disease. A key discovery was the identification of the 3rd retinal photoreceptor that regulates circadian rhythms and sleep. For his work, Russell was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2008 and the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2013. In 2015 he received the Order of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Science. He is a member of the Governing Council of the Royal Society; Russell established the Royal Society Public Engagement Committee; and was appointed by the Prime Minster as a Trustee of the Science Museum. He is a co-founder of the spin-out company Circadian Therapeutics.  Russell has published over 250 scientific papers and has received multiple national and international awards. He has written four popular science books, given TED talks and regularly contributes articles for the popular press.
