Menzies Institute Seminars: Lessons from Forensic Pathology

There is a time-honoured perception that pathologists may know everything, but that they are always too late. However, on a day-to-day basis forensic pathologists are in a key position to identify illnesses and accidents in the mortuary that may have a significant impact on family members and the community. Advice can be given and proposals can be formulated to prevent similar deaths, an area of medicine that has been called “preventive pathology”.

This lecture will deal not only with Prof Byard’s experiences of many such sad cases and deaths over the past few decades, but more importantly how something positive can be derived from these tragedies.
