The ocean revolution – canvas bucket to the microprocessor

When scientists talk about observed changes in the ocean, have you ever wondered how they get those measurements? Or how they can compare measurements taken using old techniques with those from satellites and robotic floats? Dr Bernadette Sloyan, a physical oceanographer at CSIRO, will talk about just that. Dr Sloyan’s research focusses on measuring and understanding variability and long-term changes in the ocean using mathematical models, satellites, and measurements taken from ships and autonomous floats. She is currently working on a project that is building a time-series of the East Australian Current, using ocean moorings and other observation platforms to monitor the variability and change of this important current.
