Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2027 University of Tasmania Island of Ideas program.
We’re looking for ideas that spark curiosity, ignite conversation and connect Tasmanian expertise with the challenges shaping our world. You don’t need a fully developed proposal. If you have an intriguing question, emerging issue, research insight or community conversation that deserves a wider audience, we’d love to hear from you.
Community groups, industry partners and individuals are welcome to be involved, however proposals must include a University of Tasmania collaborator. As the EOI form is only available to UTAS staff (via the Staff Intranet), external applicants should email the team to discuss their idea.
EOIs close 5.00 pm Friday 9 October 2026.
Island of Ideas is the University of Tasmania’s flagship public talks series, bringing together leading researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and community voices to ignite conversation and inspire curiosity. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Island of Ideas explores how global challenges are experienced and addressed locally, while showcasing ideas that invite us to think differently about the world around us. Each year, Island of Ideas presents approximately 15 hybrid events, held in person at the Stanley Burbury Theatre in Sandy Bay and streamed live via Zoom and the Island of Ideas YouTube channel.
Expression of Interest process
Stage One – Share your idea
Tell us about the idea or conversation you think belongs in the 2027 Island of Ideas program. You don’t need to have a final title, speakers or event format worked out. We’re interested in the strength of the idea and its potential to engage a broad public audience. The Expression of Interest form should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Stage Two – Develop the idea
Selected ideas will be developed collaboratively with the Island of Ideas team. Together, we’ll explore the central question, speakers and perspectives, event format, potential partnerships, intended audience and timing and determine the best way to bring the conversation to life.
What happens next?
Ideas will be considered for their:
- Potential to generate community interest and engage audiences
- Connection to University of Tasmania research, expertise or communities
- Timeliness and relevance
- Strength and clarity of the central idea or question
- Contribution to a diverse and compelling 2027 program
