A small fragment of pottery found on Bruny Island in Tasmania has caught the attention of thousands of social media users for its eye-catching design and potential to be hundreds of years old.
Amanda Richardson, from Northern Tasmania, had never found a piece of pottery that “stared back at her” until her most recent find near a walking track on Bruny Island in late January.
She had briefly gone off track when she spied a small ceramic fragment nestled among rocks on a beach.
Despite speculation online that its history could date back hundreds of years, a conservator says the fragment is likely to be a reproduction from the early 20th century.
